Transmission Diagnostics & Repair

Transmission problems can range from a minor adjustment to a major repair, and the symptoms are not always obvious at first. If your vehicle is not shifting properly, MZ Auto Repair in Fort Washington, MD can diagnose the issue and recommend the most cost-effective path to getting it fixed.

Signs of Transmission Trouble

Delayed or rough shifting between gears
Transmission slipping — the engine revs but the vehicle does not accelerate
Grinding or shaking during gear changes
Burning smell, often from overheated transmission fluid
Transmission warning light or check engine light
Fluid leak — transmission fluid is typically red or reddish-brown
Vehicle will not go into gear or gets stuck in one gear

Our Diagnostic Process

We begin with a scan of the transmission control module for stored codes, then perform a road test to observe the symptoms firsthand. From there, we check fluid level and condition, inspect the linkage and mounts, and perform any additional testing needed to pinpoint the problem. Many transmission symptoms are caused by issues outside the transmission itself — a failed sensor, wiring problem, or low fluid level — so accurate diagnosis is essential before recommending expensive internal work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I change my transmission fluid?

Most manufacturers recommend a transmission fluid service every 30,000 to 60,000 miles, but check your owner's manual for the specific interval. Vehicles used for towing, heavy loads, or stop-and-go driving may need it sooner.

Is it worth repairing a transmission or should I replace it?

It depends on the specific failure and the overall condition of the vehicle. Many transmission problems can be fixed without a full rebuild. We will give you an honest assessment and help you weigh the cost of repair against replacement.

Can low transmission fluid cause shifting problems?

Yes. Low fluid can cause delayed shifts, slipping, overheating, and erratic shifting. If you notice these symptoms, have the fluid level and condition checked as soon as possible.

Do you rebuild transmissions in-house?

Call 301-248-2800 and describe the symptom. We will tell you whether it is work we can do here.
